Glug #11 – Final Call

June 22, 2009 by Nick Clement

Roome

We’ve sold out again even with the increased capacity of 400. As before if you’re not able to come please let us know by changing your rsvp to let people on the waiting list take your place @ http://www.meetup.com/gluglondon

We’ve confirmed 8 illustrators for the event who’ll be working on the stairwell and also on the roof creating bespoke t-shirts.

Please bring along a plain t-shirt and get it customised for free by one of the following illustrators. Time permitting, they’ll do as many as they can.

We’re also pleased to announce a sponsor for the evening, Roome Consulting. They’ve kindly agreed to pay for the bbq. Well the first 100 people anyway, so get down early! Thanks Eleanor! For details about Roome recruitment please go to: http://www.roome.co.uk.

Also just on the bbq tip, we’re very sorry to any veggies that came last time. I only heard the other day how poor the option provided was. Please be advised that for this event, they will be doing veggie burgers all night and if you come and find me early on I’ll give you a free token.

Also on the roof bar, they’ll be doing a special Glug punch for us and they’ll also be cheaper soft drink tokens available from downstairs. Once again you’ll have to buy tokens from the main bar and on the door. Same as before, all drinks and bbq tokens will be £3.50. Finally and hopefully this isn’t too hard to swallow. We’re going to be asking people to pay £2 on the door to cover various expenses costs for the artists and materials. We hope this is ok.

We start at 6pm, hopefully this should all be fairly relaxed affair, with drinking on the roof till 10pm and then a Dj in the main bar all night. No talk this time just action.

We’re happy to confirm that the next event will be on the 25th June (next Thursday) at the Queen of Hoxton.

Weather permitting we’ll be on the roof terrace again from 6pm but this time we’re going with a summer themed illustration twist to make the upward journey more pleasant and add a bit of village fete atmosphere.

Joining us on this night we’ve confirmed the following illustrators to work on the stairwell walls and upstairs on the roof:

http://www.fett.co.uk

http://www.gemmacorrell.com

http://www.thisistoy.com

http://www.state28.com

http://www.subism.co.uk

http://www.thehyspanicgentleman.com

http://www.mrbowlegs.co.uk

Update: Also special guests the very talented Holly Wales is now aboard see more of her lovely work here and also the chaps from Mcfaul Studio will be tearing it up on the roof.

All illustrators will be working live at the event to a loose brief. Come and see them work their magic on walls, floors, boards, canvasses and on bespoke t-shirts*. As before we’ll also have a bar on the roof and a bbq (we’re hopefully going to confirm a sponsor this week to pay for this).

We’ll also have the main bar downstairs open all night, but for this event we’re not doing a talk etc which should make it a bit less stressful…:)

I hope you can all make it along. As before we only have limited places of 350 people so please rsvp quick http://www.meetup.com/gluglondon

Thanks

Nick & Ian

*Bring a long an old / plain t-shirt and get this customised by one of the illustrators on the night.

We presented the design industry with a showcase from digital advertising agency Glue London at Glug at the Queen of Hoxton pub in Shoreditch.

Head of Design Dan Griffiths, Superglue Head Simon Cam, Design Directors Ian Byrne and Matt Verity lead a inspired chat and recent work walkthrough. There were a couple of technical hitches to start but the whole night went smoothly with a fevourishly devoured BBQ and some serious ‘notworking’ from the Gluggers. Take a look at the reel here.

Danny Kirk of Granite Colour Printers put on a lovely display of top quality print work, find out more about them here.

It was also the Fingertips launch, you can check out the intro video here http://www.vimeo.com/4939860

It was a great night, thanks to all that helped, special thanks to Laura and Gemma @ Studio Output, Bones from the pub, Ben Pearce for the music and Paul Bence for his photos of the night.

See you at the bar next month on the last Thursday of the month as usual, that’s the 25th June, keep an eye on the blog for the next guest(s).

Glug London #10 – Glue London (It’s not a typo!)

May 13, 2009 by Nick Clement

glug-glue-10

Thanks to everyone for coming down to our event in April. We’re really pleased it was so well attended and hopefully we can give something back with this next ‘special / almost summer’ event – a special roof terrace BBQ! Fingers are tightly crossed for a hot sunny day on the last Thursday of this month – May 28th.

For this event we’ve hired the very cool Queen of Hoxton, roof terrace and basement. The event will start from 6pm upstairs on the roof with a free BBQ (and paid bar).

Unfortunately due to capacity we can only allow 350 to this event so please get your rsvp’s in quick via www.meetup.com/gluglondon.

Then from 8pm (hopefully just before the sun sets on London town) we’ll move down to the basement where Glue London will be putting together a short talk and run through of recent work. They’ll also be holding some mini workshops.

Following this we’ll have dj’s and various promos throughout the night.
Hope you can make it. Now for some links:

Glug London #9 – Glug v Mainframe

May 1, 2009 by Nick Clement

glug-mainframe-stab

Wow! Last night seriously blew us away, the Mainframe boys and girls rocked and hit us hard where it hurts and seriously made me a little bit sick such was the quality of work shown. Good to see old friends and new, please use the Facebook group page should you want to get chatting and extend the new and blossoming friendships or ‘Glugliness’ as we’re calling it, sad I know.

Next up Glue London will be showing off their dastardly digital deliciousness on the last Thursday of the month – 28th May at Bluu, Hoxton.

Click the link here to view the ‘History of Mainframe‘ movie they made for us. We hope you had fun, thanks again for those that helped out and to all for coming.

Ellesse Collaborates & Design Competition

April 29, 2009 by Nick Clement

create_tennis_art

Ellesse is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the design competition CREATE TENNIS ART and with uber cool illustrator and typographer Si Scott as part of the jury. The iconic Italian sportswear brand is now unveiling 2 new collaborations, with textile print superstar Kate Gibb and Greek animation genius Babis Alexiadis. Two great inspirations to enter the competition!

Kate is an internationally renowned silk screen artist having worked for the likes of Dries Van Noten, Stussy, Adidas, Virgin Records and EMI Recordings.  You might recognise her signature style from her ongoing collaboration with ‘The Chemical Brothers’ which started with the cover of the album “Surrender” (remember “hey boy, hey girl….”?).

Kate was influenced by vintage images of tennis players for the silk screen print she created for ellesse. Applying layer upon layer of colour to these original images, she developed a unique print that captures the innovative qualities of the Ellesse brand and the sense of tradition in her work as a silk screen artist.

Babis’ work focuses mostly on short animations and video art productions; it is recognised for being predominantly hand-drawn with a limited digital input. Babis has created pieces for the likes of BBC Big Screen West Midlands, the Midlands Arts Centre and Friction Arts and directed two music videos. In 2008, he won the first prize in the “Your Point of View” competition run by fashion brand BSB. He has also won the public choice award in the Micropolis international film festival in Athens, Greece.

The piece he created for the ellesse 50th anniversary consists of a quirky animation featuring hand-stitched characters which took over 100 hundred hours to create. Babis used a new technique and adopted a unique palette of water colours to illustrate the brand’s colourful history. You can check it out here.

The deadline to enter the competition has been pushed to May 10th; all you have to do is create a piece of art or design to commemorate the Ellesse 50th anniversary inspired by the brand’s Italian heritage and sporting roots in tennis.

You could win €4500 and be sent to the ellesse 50th anniversary event this summer in Rome where your work will be on display. An opportunity you shouldn’t miss…

The categories for the competition range from fashion and textiles, right through to fine art, sculpture, street art, graphics and digital.

Visit http://www.ellesse.com/50thAnniversary for more details and to enter the competition.

Updates and news can be found on the competition’s Facebook page.
